Every spring we sit down with a fresh batch of homeowners and hear what they're picturing for their backyard. This year a few themes kept coming up, and honestly, we're into all of them.
Multi-Level Layouts Are Having a Moment
Instead of one flat platform, we're building decks with two or three distinct levels — one for dining, one for lounging, one that steps down toward the yard. It breaks up a large space and gives every part of the deck a job to do.
Built-In Fire Features
A wood-burning fire pit or a gas insert framed right into the decking turns a three-season space into a year-round one. We've been pairing these with low-voltage step lighting so the whole area stays usable after dark.

Warmer Tones & Disappearing Rails
Composite decking in warmer, richer tones is replacing the cool gray that was everywhere a few years ago. Think walnut and cedar-toned boards that feel more like real wood, without the maintenance.
Cable railing keeps climbing in popularity too — it disappears visually and keeps sightlines to the yard open, which matters a lot on properties near water or woods.
