Concrete Patio vs. Paver Patio: Which Is Right for Your Michigan Backyard?
Patio conversations almost always come down to the same question: concrete or pavers? Both are solid choices for a Michigan backyard, and both show up a lot in our project list — the right one just depends on what you want the space to do and how much you want to maintain it.
Concrete: Clean, Simple, and Budget-Friendly
A poured concrete patio is the most straightforward option we install. It goes down as one continuous slab, which means fewer seams for weeds or ants to find their way into, and it's typically the more affordable route per square foot. Stamped and stained finishes have come a long way too — you can get a lot of the visual texture of stone or pavers at a lower cost.
Pavers: More Design Flexibility, More Upkeep
Pavers give you more room to play with pattern, color, and shape, and if one ever cracks or stains badly, you can pull that single piece and swap it — no patching a whole slab. The tradeoff is more seams, which means more opportunity for weeds, and periodic joint-sand refreshing to keep things tight.
“Neither option is the 'wrong' choice — it really comes down to how much design flexibility you want versus how low-maintenance you want the finished patio to be.”
How Michigan Winters Factor In
Freeze-thaw cycles are the real test for any patio material here. A concrete slab needs a properly compacted base and control joints cut in the right places to manage cracking as the ground shifts. Pavers actually flex slightly with that movement, which is part of why they're a popular choice on sites with less stable soil. Either way, the prep work underneath matters more than the material on top — that's where most patio failures actually start.
Not Sure Which Fits Your Yard?
We walk every patio project through both options during the consultation, with real cost numbers for your specific space. If you're weighing a concrete pour against pavers, we're happy to talk through what makes sense for your yard, your budget, and how you plan to use the space.
